Charles Edward Shirah (affectionately known as "Chuck"), 78, of Helena, AL, passed away peacefully at Shelby Baptist in Alabaster on Monday night, March 24, 2025.

Chuck was born on April 11, 1946, in New Orleans, LA, to Beatrice Lorrane Shirah (Boraland) and Angus Morgan Shirah, Jr. He was a graduate of Norview High School in Norfolk, VA and North Florida Junior College before joining the Navy then marrying the love of his life, Genny, on March 23, 1968, at Mary Belle Baptist Church in Live Oak.

Chuck graduated from Auburn University in 1972 with a degree in Electrical Engineering as he began his 11-year service in the Navy. He left the navy for a career with Alabama Power, retiring in 2008. He worked at Barry Steam Plant, Greene County Steam Plant, Corporate Headquarters in Birmingham, Bouldin Hydroelectric Plant, and Logan Martin Hydroelectric Plant before retiring in 2008.

Known for his mustachioed smile, Chuck enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and being right. He gave of his time to help his community in multiple civic groups over the years and was an active member in all aspects of church life. His wife, daughters, and grandchildren were the center of his life. He was always willing to help friends and neighbors. He had a huge heart for his daughters’ and grandchildren’s friends, always welcoming them like family. He adored his wife, Genny and after 4 months of earthly separation, they have been reunited with God.

Chuck is survived by his daughters, Julie Shirah and Cindy Compton (Greg); his grandchildren, Bailey and Delaney Compton; his sisters, Patty Strickland (Larry) and Mary Ennemoser (Butch); his English Springer Spaniel, Griffyn Shirah. He is preceded in death by his wife Genny Shirah and his parents, Red and Lorraine Shirah.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 12:00 - 12:30 am, at Harris Funeral Home with graveside services to follow at 1:00 PM in the Live Oak Cemetery where he will be laid to eternal rest next to the love of his life Barbara.

In honor of Chuck’s life, his family asks that you celebrate his memory by sharing time and joy with loved ones and friends. Donations in his memory to the following are appreciated: Helena Methodist Church.
