Doris Butler Crews

Doris Lillie Butler Crews February 2, 1917-October 7, 2011 Doris Lillie Butler Crews passed away on October 7, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center at the Advent Christian Village. While at the Good Samaritan Center, she was lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff. Doris was 94 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy L. Crews, her daughter Jacqueline Besch, her brothers Revis Butler and Marvin Butler. Doris is survived by her son Thomas D Crews (Nancy) of Highlands Ranch, Co, her daughter Cassandra Mueller of Naperville, Illinois, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Doris was born in Live Oak on February 2, 1917. She attended the local schools and graduated from high school in 1935. She was a graduate of Stetson University in 1939. During WWII she joined the American Red Cross and followed troops around Europe and North Africa serving doughnuts and coffee to battle weary soldiers. After the war she returned to Live Oak where she taught school. In the 1950’s she and her husband Roy moved to Aurora, Illinois where they taught at Aurora College (now University). In 1975 she retired from Aurora College and returned to Florida to live. In 1981, she and Roy moved to the Advent Christian Village to live out their golden years. Doris’ grandfather, Thomas Dowling had helped establish the ACV in the early 20th Century. In keeping with that tradition of service, Doris was active in many quality of life programs at the Advent Christian Village. Graveside services were held, 11:00 AM Friday, October 14th in the Live Oak Cemetery. A memorial service for Doris Crews will be held on Saturday October 15 at 11:00 AM at the Bixler Memorial Advent Christian Church, Dowling Park, Florida. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Advent Christian Village, P.O. Box 4305, Dowling Park, FL 32064 in memory of Doris Crews.
