Frank Darrow Helvenston, Jr.

F.D. “Duna” Helvenston, Jr., age 86, passed away December 9, 2010 at Vicars Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He was born on September 9, 1924 in Live Oak, FL to Darrow Helvenston and Mozelle Wilder Helvenston. He was raised in Live Oak, attended local schools, and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. After attending the University of Florida and Centenary College, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served as a Captain during World War II.
Duna was a partner for forty years at B.W. Helvenston & Sons, an insurance agency his grandfather founded in 1892. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, a Master Mason in Barrett Lodge #43 in Live Oak, the Suwannee Country Club, and a member of BPOE #1165, also in Live Oak. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, which his family helped found.
He is survived by Wyman Harvard, Jr. & Brant Helvenston; nephew, Lee Harvard; Cousins, Mary Damon Helvenston Clayton, Orlando, FL, B.W. Helvenston, III, and many cousins and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Cordelia Helvenston Harvard.
Duna will be remembered affectionately by family and friends in so many different ways and particularly for his kindness, love of his family, passion for the Suwannee River, and sense of humor.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 Friday, December 17, at St. Luke’s in Live Oak, followed by a graveside interment in the Helvenston family plot at the Live Oak cemetery, Don Woodrum officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation to the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Priest Pantry, which provides food and aid to families in need in Suwannee County, P.O. Box 1238, Live Oak, FL 32064.
