Jack Garrett, age 85, of Live Oak, FL passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Suwannee Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Baker, FL moving to Live Oak in 1938. He graduated from Suwannee High School in 1947. He joined the Florida National Guard in 1947 and retired after thirty years of service. He worked for the State of Florida Division of Beverage from 1955 to 1982. He was elected Chief of Police in 1983 and served until it merged with the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Department in 1990. He served as deputy with the Sheriff’s Department until retiring in 1991. After retirement, he went on several mission trips, serving in Diamondhead Mississippi, West Florida and Haiti. He enjoyed helping and spent many hours in volunteer service to the Suwannee Quarterback Club. He was a faithful member and last surviving charter member of Westwood Baptist Church where he helped cook for events and served as usher. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Garrett, Live Oak; three sons, Danny (Lori) Garrett, McAlpin, FL; David (Donnie) Garrett, Orange Park, FL; Roger (Terri) Garrett, Lake City, FL; five grandchildren, R.J., Darla, Marcus, Caleb and Callie; three great grandchildren, four step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Visitation was held Wednesday, November 5th one hour prior to the services from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the church. Funeral services were held, 2:00 PM, Wednesday, November 5 , 2014 in the Westwood Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Deas officiating. Internment followed in the Live Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Westwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 920 Eleventh St., Live Oak, FL 32064.
